Gratitude changes how we see everything else. Scripture invites thanks in good seasons and hard ones, not because everything is easy, but because God is good. Here are eight King James verses about giving thanks.
The verses
1. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (KJV)
"In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you."
"In every thing" doesn't mean for every thing. Even in hard seasons, there's something to thank God for.
2. Psalm 107:1 (KJV)
"O give thanks unto the LORD, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever."
Two simple reasons for thanks: God is good, and His mercy lasts forever.
3. Psalm 100:4 (KJV)
"Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name."
Thanksgiving is the way into God's presence. Start your prayers with thanks.
4. Colossians 3:15 (KJV)
"And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful."
A thankful heart and a peaceful heart often go together.
5. James 1:17 (KJV)
"Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning."
Every good gift, big or small, comes from God.
6. Psalm 118:24 (KJV)
"This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it."
Today is a gift. Look for one thing in it to enjoy.
7. Psalm 103:2 (KJV)
"Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits."
It's easy to forget God's benefits. This verse is a reminder to remember.
8. Psalm 136:1 (KJV)
"O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever."
One of the Bible's most repeated lines: His mercy endureth for ever.
A prayer for thanksgiving
Lord, thank you for this day and the breath in my lungs. Thank you for the people I love and the small kindnesses I overlook. Teach me to notice your goodness everywhere. Amen.
Putting it into practice
