Patience is easy to want and hard to practice, especially when the waiting is for something that matters. Scripture treats patience as something grown, not something you're simply born with. Here are eight King James verses for the slow, ordinary work of staying steady.
The verses
1. James 1:3-4 (KJV)
"Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing."
Patience isn't wasted waiting. James calls it work that's actually finishing something in you.
2. Romans 12:12 (KJV)
"Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer."
Three things held together: hope, patience and prayer. They tend to need each other.
3. Psalm 37:7 (KJV)
"Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass."
Patience here comes with a specific warning: don't measure your wait against someone else's timeline.
4. Ecclesiastes 7:8 (KJV)
"Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit."
A patient spirit is named alongside humility, not just endurance.
5. Colossians 1:11 (KJV)
"Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness."
Even patience gets strength from God. You're not expected to grit your teeth through it alone.
6. Hebrews 10:36 (KJV)
"For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise."
Patience often sits right between obedience and the promise. It's the hardest part, and the last part.
7. 1 Thessalonians 5:14 (KJV)
"Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men."
Patience with God's timing and patience with people are taught in the very same sentence.
8. Galatians 6:9 (KJV)
"And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not."
A promised harvest, for whoever doesn't quit first.
A prayer for patience
Lord, I'm tired of waiting, and I don't always wait well. Strengthen me with Your patience through the power of Christ, not just my own willpower. Help me trust Your timing, even when it's slower than mine. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Putting it into practice
Name what you're waiting for right now, and hand the timeline to God in prayer.
The next time you feel impatient with someone, pause before you speak.
Keep Galatians 6:9 somewhere visible during a long season of waiting.
