Burnout doesn't always look like collapse. Sometimes it looks like still showing up, still doing the list, running on fumes the whole time. Scripture doesn't glorify constant output. It makes real room for rest. Here are eight King James verses for when you're running on empty.
The verses
1. Matthew 11:28-30 (KJV)
"Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."
Jesus' invitation is to people who are already working hard, not people who've given up.
2. Exodus 33:14 (KJV)
"And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest."
Rest here is tied to presence, not to finishing the to-do list.
3. Psalm 23:2-3 (KJV)
"He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul..."
Sometimes the Shepherd has to make us lie down. Rest isn't always our idea.
4. Mark 6:31 (KJV)
"And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat."
Jesus said this to His own disciples, in the middle of their busiest ministry season.
5. Psalm 68:19 (KJV)
"Blessed be the Lord, who daily loadeth us with benefits, even the God of our salvation."
Even in a full, demanding day, this verse points to daily benefits, not just daily demands.
6. Galatians 6:2 (KJV)
"Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ."
Burnout often grows in isolation. This verse is permission to let someone else help carry the load.
7. Jeremiah 31:25 (KJV)
"For I have satiated the weary soul, and I have replenished every sorrowful soul."
A promise aimed specifically at the weary: God satisfies, not just sympathizes.
8. Psalm 116:7 (KJV)
"Return unto thy rest, O my soul; for the LORD hath dealt bountifully with thee."
Sometimes rest isn't found; it's returned to, on purpose.
A prayer for burnout
Lord Jesus, I'm running on empty and I don't know how to slow down. Teach me to take Your yoke instead of carrying everything on my own. Restore my soul, and show me where I need to let something go. In Jesus' name, Amen.
