There are no perfect words for grief, and you don't need them. Scripture doesn't rush mourners. It sits with them and offers hope that is bigger than death. These eight King James verses are for the days when the loss feels heavy.

The verses

1. Matthew 5:4 (KJV)

"Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted."

Mourning isn't a lack of faith. Jesus promised comfort to those who mourn.

2. Revelation 21:4 (KJV)

"And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away."

One day there will be no more tears, sorrow or pain. Until then, it's okay to cry.

3. Psalm 30:5 (KJV)

"Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning."

Grief can feel like a long night. This verse promises that morning comes.

4. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 (KJV)

"Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God."

The comfort God gives you now may one day help someone else who is grieving.

5. Psalm 147:3 (KJV)

"He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds."

God binds up broken hearts gently. Give yourself time to heal.

6. Psalm 34:18 (KJV)

"The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit."

When your heart is broken, God comes near, not far.

7. John 11:25-26 (KJV)

"Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?"

Jesus spoke these words to a grieving sister before raising her brother. He is the resurrection and the life.

8. 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14 (KJV)

"But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him."

Christians grieve, but not without hope. This is Paul's comfort for those who have lost loved ones in Christ.

A prayer for grief

Lord, my heart is broken, and I miss them so much. Thank you that you comfort those who mourn. Hold me in this sorrow, and let me feel your nearness when the grief comes in waves. Amen.

Putting it into practice

  • Let yourself cry without apologizing.

  • Write a short letter to God about the person you miss.

  • Accept help when people offer it, even small things like a meal.
